Food for Thought....

As the summer winds down, gardens aren't looking so perky as they did.  In fact, perhaps your herbs are going to seed?  To put this phase to good use, consider using the edible flowers.  For example, did you know that chive flowers are edible and pretty in salads and soups?  Food stylists know that making food visually tantalizing calls for pulling out a bag of tricks.  Here's some other things to consider for your gardens at home:

You should always include some herbs in your garden with the idea of letting them flower and considering the bloom to be an entirely different harvest of their own. Some herbs that have tasty, edible blossoms are:
  • Calendula
  • Chives
  • Garlic chives
  • Roses
  • Violets
  • Dill
  • Fennel
Don't forget the wildcrafted herb blooms of the dandelion, chicory and red clover to name just a few. Even mint blooms can be included in your edible herbal flower garden. They are tasteless but pretty if included in a glass of iced tea.
